The Standard Launches New Accidental Death and Dismemberment Occupational Assistance Service

Standard Insurance Company (The Standard) is launching its Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Occupational Assistance service as a complimentary feature to its Group AD&D and Life insurance products. The service is the first of its kind in the industry and can provide support to employees who have experienced an AD&D loss to help them return to work and productive lives.

“When serious accidents happen, the idea of returning to work can feel distant and unattainable. For an employee returning to work after the loss of a hand, foot or even sight, the day-to-day responsibilities he or she had for years may suddenly seem foreign,” said Jennifer Gassaway, marketing product manager at The Standard. “Through our AD&D Occupational Assistance service, employees are supported and can leverage our staff’s expertise for guidance on moving forward with their lives.”

AD&D Occupational Assistance provides employees, who have experienced an eligible1 specified accidental dismemberment, with access to The Standard’s Workplace PossibilitiesSM consultants to provide guidance on how to best address any new challenges and get back to work. Consultants can collaborate directly with the employer, employee and his or her medical team to understand the medical condition, learn job roles and daily responsibilities, and recommend appropriate solutions or accommodations as part of a rehabilitation plan. Consultants also can help purchase medically supported ergonomic equipment.

“For the first time, a service is available to those who have experienced an AD&D loss that provides more than just a reimbursement. Our team of vocational, nurse and behavioral health consultants are available to help assess each individual’s needs for returning to work and execute on a plan that is customized and therefore more effective,” Gassaway says. “The service doesn’t simply help an employee — the employer benefits as well, as the employer is more likely to see the return of a valued employee, avoiding the loss of expertise and having to hire.”

AD&D Occupational Assistance, a service included with all Group Life insurance policies that include AD&D, may cover up to $10,000 of approved return-to-work expenses, including a Workplace PossibilitiesSM consultant’s time, ergonomic equipment, and cost of accommodations and vocational assistance. Services must be accessed within two years of a loss.

1 Employees are eligible if they experience a loss of hand, foot, eyesight, speech, hearing in both ears, thumb and index finger on the same hand or any combination of these dismemberments due to an accident. They also are eligible due to paralysis of one or more limbs due to an accident.
